SEL is a lifelong developmental process that helps people develop skills to support healthy relationships and development. SEL competencies include: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. CASEL defines SEL as an integral part of education and human development through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. Critics of SEL argue that we must examine how we promote SEL to ensure culturally responsive and inclusive practices that encourage authentic expression of self.
