Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

DEI refers to three interconnected concepts that are essential in cultivating a culture of belonging:

  1. Diversity: Diversity refers to the presence of differences within a given group. This can include race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, physical & mental abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, and other identities, perspectives, and ideologies. Embracing diversity involves recognizing, valuing, and appreciating differences.
  2. Equity: Equity involves ensuring fairness and impartiality in processes, systems, and opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background or identities. It goes beyond equality (which focuses on treating everyone the same) by acknowledging that different individuals have different needs and starting points. Equity seeks to provide each individual with what they need to succeed and thrive.
  3. Inclusion: Inclusion refers to the practice of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued. It is about fostering a culture where diverse perspectives are actively sought, listened to, and integrated. Inclusion requires deliberate efforts to remove barriers to participation and to create opportunities for all individuals to contribute fully.
