Trauma-Informed Practices

Trauma is a response to a sudden, unpredictable, physiological experience that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. Trauma can involve a single experience, or enduring repeated events that completely overwhelm our ability to cope or integrate the ideas and emotions involved in an experience. Trauma may also be experienced through intergenerational, historic and societal patterns of oppression. Trauma is an Event, Experience and Effect. Trauma-informed schools are school systems that recognize and respond to the impact of trauma on students, staff, and other members of the school community. Trauma-informed schools aim to create a safe and caring environment that supports students' mental and physical health, and helps them build resilience.
